The Spanish civil war took place between 1936 and 1939 I looked at a number of different propaganda posters from this war. I did this as a number of propaganda posters from this time frame already caught my eye for there unique style.
This poster being a prime example of that style the poster is trying to convey the message the spain is strong and dominant and it does this by using a massive image of a Lion as the focal point of the poster. Thee lion which is standing tall and proud is not exactly subtle but it is a clever way to get it's point across. Also the "Espana" and spanish flag in the background make the poster instantly recognisable as spanish and makes you associate the Lion with Spain.
Although the message is clear and the way it's presented should have a massive first impact with the colours and imagery but the way the colours are toned down and the lion is just sitting there take away from this and this is the unique style I was referring too. The colours are not strong and bold and are more passive and fade into one another well. The white outline around the lion works as a gradient and fades the image into the spanish flag, it also works too highlight the picture of the lion.
The whole overall image gets its message across but without being too strong on the eye or dramatising the message of the poster. When you compare this with the other styles of propaganda such as the american anti-Japanese one here. The differences are clear too see the colours are much stronger and brighter in the poster even the rising sun background is prominent because of it strong and bold colours. Also the message from this american poster has been dramatised to suggest americans are not working as hard or as fast as the japanese and this wold help them take ("smash") Tokyo a lot faster, the imagery also adds to this message by showing endless rows of Japanese soldiers/people working this is where the message is dramatised.
Another key theme I noticed whilst analysing spainish posters is themajority of them stay away from straight lines being used. The lines are often curved or even diagonal I like this style as it gives the posters a mor artistic feel and although the message is serious in the poster the curves take away from the directness and the seriousness of for example the "I want you" poster I had previously looked at.
The typography is also more curvy than other styles of posters I had looked at linking it in well with the rest of poster and making look like it belongs. Sometimes this is to fit the text in a specific place such as on a diagonal line or around the bottom of the page, I like this as it was refreshing to see something different than sticking text at either the bottom or the top of a page as it is more imaginitive but also engages the viewer more making them want to know what is going on.
The best example of this is here where the text is curved around the bottom of the page to make it fit. Aesthetically though I like it as it fits in with the imagery and the overall visual style of the poster. A key part of this however is that the text remains readable to the viewer so in my design I will try not to overdo the shape of the typography, as too much will make it too hard to read, however it will be something too experiment with on the posters.
